Cannot upgrade to 3.5 and can no longer upload media

  • This is a bit of a weird one. When I try to update to 3.5 or to update plugins, I get the following error.

    Could not create directory.: /home/bumpy/public_html/thegarageblog.com/garage/wp-content/upgrade/wordpress-3.tmp

    Today, one of my authors discovered that he could not upload media. I just tried myself and received the following error.

    “fiat.jpg” has failed to upload due to an error
    The uploaded file could not be moved to /home/bumpy/public_html/thegarageblog.com/garage/wp-content/uploads.

    I have tried changing file permissions on upload and upgrade folders to 666. I have disabled all plugins and switched out the template to twenty eleven. None of the above made a difference.

    FWIW, I have another WP install on the same server, that is running multisite and that upgrade went perfectly.
