I’ve installed WordPress from the Ubuntu repositories, which are never up to date so I have 3.8.5.

I’d like to be current with 4.2.2, but attempting to update via the Dashboard insists that I have the latest version.

Should I simply replace all the files (except for customizations as described in the codex) from a downloaded copy, or is there a way to force updating through the Dashboard? I have added FTP_MODE=Direct to php.config, and am able to install plugins and update themes. Only the core files themselves are insisting that 3.8.5 is the latest.

try MANUAL updating. Download a fresh copy of the WordPress .zip file to your computer, unzip it, and use that to copy up all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory. You may need to delete the old copies of files & folder on your server before uploading the new ones. Read the Manual Update directions first.
If you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong.

Thanks, Tara. That did the trick perfectly and my locally installed test site is now up to current revision. I used the “Simple Backup” plugin to back everything up nicely, but had no problem even though it was far more than a two-revision jump!
