Cannot update plugins – Could not create directory

  • I have a WP blog on my own server, which has been running for about a year or so.
    Until now I have never had trouble doing any updates.

    Today I have 2 plugins and the WP 3.9 update available.
    All three fail with various variations of the same type of error:
    An error occurred while updating Captcha: Could not create directory. captcha/bws_menu/images

    I have checked the permissions on wp-content and even set them to 777 for now, but the problem persists.

    Captcha
    When I attempt to update Captcha to 3.9.9 I get:
    An error occurred while updating Captcha: Could not create directory. captcha/bws_menu/images

    Jetpac
    When I attempt to update jtepac to 2.9.3 I get:
    Could not create directory. jetpack/_inc

    WordPress 3.9
    And when I attempt to update to WordPress 3.9 I get:

    Unpacking the update…

Could not create directory.: wordpress/wp-admin/css/colors/ectoplasm
