• Hi,

Everything has been fine for about a year, suddenly I faced this issue:

At first, I could not visit /update-core.php at all. Connection timeout occurred. Now, I can access it (still the time it takes for that specific page to load is extremely slow compared to the rest of my admin area).

However, when I try to auto-update the plugins, my site gets stuck in maintenance mode (ie. showing Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.).

I know how to get out of it (by deleting the file via ftp), but I don’t understand is why this happens in the first place, and how will I ever be able to update my plugins..?

The maintenance message also appears when I try to access the admin area, so unless I delete the file via ftp, there is nothing else to do.

    Any advise appreciated

  • Hi,

It sounds like you don’t have enough memory for PHP to execute the update. To increase memory allocated to PHP see: Increasing Memory Allocated to PHP.

Also Check out the codex article on Common WordPress Errors. Specifically Maintenance Mode Following Upgrade and PHP Errors.

If you cannot access to php.ini to change the memory limit you may need to contact your hosting provider

    hi,
thanks for the reply… memory was what I suspected too, but apart from updating plugins, everything else is working fine.

So I checked my php.ini and my limit is 128M. I set the same limit on config, but still nothing ??

Until this is resolved, is there any other was of updating my plugins? Can I do it via ftp and what is the correct practice for not losing data?

I’m not sure if it is just me, but ever since 3.9.2 every PHP action seems to be 10x slower where after a while, the site just gives a PHP timeout error. Especially with Bulk Delete plugin, but it does it for everything after the update.

    Hi JutRunLab,

Yes, you can try and update it via FTP or filemanager. to do so you can view the documentation for plugins here
