On my self-hosted site, I cannot update any Jetpack settings after updating to 5.0. I see the message “Error updating settings. SyntaxError (DOM Exception 12): The string did not match the expected pattern.” The particular option I was trying to turn off was “Show photo metadata (Exif) in carousel, when available”.

This also includes, for example, trying to click the “I already use this app.” link in the WordPress apps ad. That produces the same error message. I was previously using Jetpack with no issues.

  • The connection between your site and Jetpack could have been disrupted during the update.

Could you try disconnecting Jetpack from WordPress.com and then reconnecting, to see if that fixes the problem?

To disconnect Jetpack from WordPress.com, click on Jetpack from your site’s Dashboard and then click on the “Manage site connection” link towards the bottom of the page. Then click the “Disconnect” button to disconnect.

To reconnect, click the green button that says “Connect to WordPress.com”.

Let me know once you’ve done that, and I’ll take another look!

I can’t disconnect. When I do, I get the error message “There was an error disconnecting Jetpack. Error: SyntaxError: Unexpected token < in JSON at position 0”.

That is also the error message I am seeing when I try to update settings now, a change from yesterday.

(I do think that when I was troubleshooting this myself before I posted yesterday, I did refresh the connection then.)

Update: I also tried deactivating, deleting the plugin, and reinstalling, but I am still getting the same error.

I have resolved the issue. There is a conflict with the plugin WP-SpamShield. When I disabled that plugin, I was able to update settings. I am notifying the creator of that plugin of the issue. Thank you for your help.
