I have created templates using Artisteer and downloaded some free ones from third party websites. When I upload them to HostGator I do not see them under Appearances > Themes when I log in to wp-admin control panel.

I used to be able to see my uploaded themes and select them for use, now I don’t. I can’t find any tutorial that will help me, and I am loosing my mind! Please help!

  • How are you uploading these themes? Do you see any messages about broken themes at the bottom of Appearance->Themes?

I am uploading a .zip file to HostGator cPanel into the /themes folder, then HostGator has an unzip feature that puts the theme there the way it should be.

I dont see any message about broken themes… I only see a library of assorted free themes that I can use from WordPress.

Try unpacking the zip file and uploading the theme folder to /wp-content/themes

I have tried two different methods:

1: upload the zip file to HostGator file manager (into wp-content/themes folder) then unzip. This has typically been the way I do it.

2: I downloaded an FTP client and synced with my HostGator site/account and uploaded the already zipped files into the wp-content/themes folder.

When done I go to my wordpress account dashboard and when looking under Appearances > Themes the only themes visible are the free ones that were created by the WP community or whomever…. but my themes are nowhere to be seen.

I don’t think this is an FTP issue, something else is going on with wordpress.

I have a similar problem. WordPress (3.4) does not allow show deleted or added themes. It also does not allow me to make any changes to the existing themes. So if I add a new image as a header, or a new background, the old images continue to show. Where WP is getting these images I can not figure out. This sound like some type of caching issue. Trying different things, I deleted hyper-cache plug-in, but that was not it. I agree that this is something with WP. I would like to escalate this as a bug because in 3.5 years using WP, I have never seen this before.

@supersnapp: Please don’t highjack another poster’s thread. Post a new topic.

Why do you consider it hijacking if it sounds like the same issue? Hijacking would mean I am changing the subject. I am providing more information about what could be the same topic. Should we have separate threads for the same issue? So solutions would be posted in two different threads. That does not sound right.

Your issue is not the same. Please post a new topic.

    Ok, here I go.

@ supersnapp: I don’t know if your problem is the same as mine or not, but I have resolved the problem I was experiencing.

First, being new to WordPress means that my mistake is probably common, yet I still feel like an idiot for not knowing better.

The problem is that I was logging into my blog at rootedup.wordpress.com/wp-admin and trying to select the themes I had uploaded to HostGator cPanel. This will not EVER work, because the proper HTTP:// to go to is rootedup.com/wp-admin.

A slight difference, but one that makes all the difference! I can now login to my correct admin and select the themes that have been there all along, I just wasn’t going to the right place to see them.

*NOTE: You will also need to make sure that the Name Servers are the ones used by your hosting provider. In my case, cokesburymargate.com does not have the Name Servers for HostGator, therefore I cannot expect and edits to WordPress to work, even if I install WordPress on the site in my cPanel using Fantastico Delux.

I hope all of this was helpful… I finally figured it out with a very helpful tech rep from HostGator that chatted with after 1.5 hours.

Hi RootedUp, Looks like esmi was correct, my issue is different. Thanks for describing the issue. I have opened up another ticket for my issue.
