cannot move blog URI to root directory

  • I’ve installed WordPress in a directory called /journal, and I want my blog to be at just https://www.dumb-luck.org, but I cannot get it to configure correctly. I’ve gone to options >> general and altered the blog URI but WordPress doesn’t seem to want to recognize it. The view site tab links to https://www.dumb-luck.org/index.php but whenever I edit the index.php template, it ends up editting the one in /journal. What can I do to fix this?

  • I don’t know the precise answer re editing through the control panel, but if you simply edit the index.php file manually and upload it, that should do the trick. Just make sure you upload it to the correct directory.

    I’ve moved mine around a couple of times. Here’s how I did it:
    1) Backup EVERYTHING as it is.
    2) Take a COPY of everything in the subfolder and move it to the root (essentialy you now have 2 of everything, one in root, and on in the subfolder)
    3) Login to the admin – UNDER the original subfolder
    4) Go through ALL of the options and change the Website URI and the Blog URL – there’s two separate options for that.
    5) Logout and close your browser.
    6) Delete the old subfolder
    7) Fire up your browser and navigate to the new address
    8) Attempt to login from that location
    I’ve successfuly moved my blog up and down folders using this method several times. If you still experience problems, try cleaning out your cookies and/or your cache.

    I happened by your instructions for moving folders and it worked like a charm. It was as easy as anything. Thanks for the good instructions!

    I’ve tried following the instructions at the different-address page, but they are unclear – in particular the step on changing the wp-config file. We’re instructed to fill in our db details in wp-config-sample and save it as wp-config, but why should the db details be any different (if we’re keeping the same db, and the only change we’re making is to move the blog address)? If I follow the instructions literally, I’m merely re-saving the identical file. In any event, when I follow the instructions, I get a fatal error on line 2 message – and get the same message when I tried, just on a guess, putting the new wp-config file in the same folder as the new index.php file. Am eager to get this ironed out. I’m reluctant to try the second method – not least because I don’t understand why it SHOULD work – but may try it soon.
