It sounds like there is a mismatch between where the database thinks WP is installed and where it really is. The hack may have prevented the uninstall process from fully completing.

Seeing that you were hacked and you are just starting out, I would start completely over. Be sure all files are deleted from both WP installations. Also delete the entire database created for WP. Restart the installation process as if you had a new, blank site. If you were to attempt to save anything from the hacked site, you could be reintroducing a backdoor or malicious code to your new site, it’s not worth the risk.

Today https://jawitzeastlondonhouses.co.za/blog gives me “Error establishing a database connection”.

Please verify if you have entered the correct database name, database username, database password and MySQL hostname in your wp-config.php file.

Thanks everyone. Both comments valid and will first work through the config file.I’d like to at least understand what led to this – I’ll then seriously have to consider deleting and starting fresh – again.
    Thanks again.
