I don’t think my WP installation was hacked, because no defacing has happened at all, but for some reason the past 24 hours myself (admin) and users cannot login to the wordpress admin.

It keeps sending back to the homepage. Weird…but I have no idea how to overcome this. I’d start disabling plugins if I could but I cannot get into the WP admin so I’m stuck.

    Any ideas are appreciated ??

    Have you tried:

    1. contacting your host if they did any changes to your account.

    2. deleting/renaming your .htaccess

    3. deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    4. switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

    5. resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    6. re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress?

    1. I’m the host. I own the servers. No changes and we’re running mod security and suPHP so I’m fairly certain there was no XSS going on. I’m confident in ruling out a hacking.
    2. Not yet, I’ll tinker with that real quick.
    3. I can’t…cause I cannot login ??
    4. I can’t…cause I cannot login ??
    5. So just copy the files (backup) to another location and empty out the folder to see if it works?
    6. That may be overkill, but I’m willing to try.

I should probably note that I have 38,513 posts on the website. Not sure if WordPress has an article limit, but wanted to share in case it was something to consider.

We’re running an 8-core Xeon server with 8GB RAM. We should have plenty of resources to handle this.

If you don’t have access to your admin panel, access your server via FTP or SFTP, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the Default theme (Twenty Ten theme) to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue.

You may be low on memory. If that’s the case, review this

This is very very VERY weird.

I did what you said. I removed .htaccess, removed plugins content, refreshed website…

Then I restarted MySQL on the server. Not sure which if the previously mentioned did it, but I can login now. I wonder if MySQL was locked up somehow.

At any rate, I’m in and I thank you ??
