• I just did a manual upgrade from version 2.2x to version 3.1.2 and now I can not login. It does not give me any error it just keeps taking me back to the login page. I have tried resetting my password and clearing cookies but nothing seems to help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • It’s unwise to upgrade that much in a single step. Did you make a database backup before you began?

Try deactivating all plugins. If you don’t have access to your admin panel, try manually resetting your plugins, using ftp rename plugins folder to plugins_hold and create a blank plugins folder If that resolves the issue, delete blank plugins folder and rename original back to plugins reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

I tried disabling all the plugins and it still will not let me login to the admin section.

I do have access to backups if I need them. I would rather try and get this working as is though since there are rather a lot of tables and I do not have access to the backups (I would have to request them from someone else)

Is there anything else I can try?

As @esmi asked did you make a backups before you upgraded as you should have upgraded in steps and not upgrade fro 2.2 to 3.1.2

yeah as I said I do have access to backups if I need them. but I have to request them from someone else and since there are a lot of tables that would need to be reset I would rather try something else first.

Is there anything else I can try before I go back to version 2.2?

If not how should I step this upgrade to 3.1.2. What versions do I need to step through.

I did not see anything in the upgrade documentation about there being a problem upgrading this big of a step do I did not know that I should not.

This are steps to upgrade you have to upgrade each version

For those tracking how to upgrade from version to version in order to maintain database structural integrity, here is the latest upgrade path:
    2.1.1 -> 2.2.1 -> 2.3 -> 2.5 -> 2.7 -> 2.9 -> 3.0 -> 3.0.4 -> 3.1 -> 3.1.2
    UPGRADE PROCESS

    1. backup database
    2. disable plug-ins
    3. switch theme to default
    4. delete /wp-admin directory from server
    5. delete /wp-includes directory from server
    6. check-in /wp-admin directory from local machine to server
    7. check-in /wp-includes directory from local machine to server
    8. check-in everything from /wp-content directories from local machine to server EXCEPT {your theme} directory
    9. update wp-config.php using wp-config-sample.php
    10. check-in everything from / directory from local machine to server
    11. enable plug-ins **only after last upgrade
    12. switch theme to {your theme}
    13. review and test site

I have 56 different wordpress tables. do I need to restore each one from backup or only certain ones?

You need to restore them all and upload WordPress 2.2. Then start working through the upgrade steps.

When I upgraded to 3.1.2 and updated the database would it have created new tables as well?

Normally it just upgrades the tables but, in a 2.2 -> 3.1.2 upgrade, some new tables may be created.

OK i just got everything back to the orginal state. I am on version 2.2.2 Do I need to start with 2.3?

Also once I get to version 2.7 can I use the Automatic update feature or will that jump to far ahead?

Thanks everyone for all the help. I just inherited this miss and am trying to get a figured out.

Use the upgrade series posted above. And, no – do not use the auto-upgrade feature until you reach 3.0.

    I’m stuck again!!!

I have been upgrading one at a time manually. I made it through version 2.3 and 2.5 but when I upgraded from 2.5 to 2.7 I can not login to the admin section. It will not login exactly as it was before. I have tried disabling plugins and clearing cookies but does not help.

Any thoughts on what I can do?

    I have tried disabling plugins

The fairly comprehensive instructions that govpatel posted specifically said that you should disable all plugins before you upgrade.

Yes I did disable all plugins before I tried upgrading. What I mean was that I also tried renaming the plugins folder as was suggested last time when it did not work.
