I cannot login to the backend of my website. I have changed the password by entering my username and clicking on the links in the subsequent email but to no avail.
The main site is up and about and not a problem. I tried clearing the cache of my browsers (tried it out in IE and Firefox – latest versions) but I still cannot login. There is no error message. Just above the username a new box appears with a red strip on the left border but no error description.
    Could somebody please help?

OK, I tried changing the password many times through the log in screen but the same problem. I also tried checking what happens to the password through phpMyAdmin and suppose I type in say abdcde in the login screen something like $P$BuiO4iQr.zQeEr.XWYKLiLxIaE80uo. is displayed in the user_pass column of wp_users table. Does this help anyone in arriving at a solution?
    Thanks in advance

I don’t think that will solve your problem, but that’s something one must do for testing, be it only for clearing it as indeed not being the problem : you should reinstall your blog’s engine, since we cannot entirely rule out the possibility of a file having been corrupted.

Basically, you can replace (home)/wp-admin, wp-includes and the files at the root of your (home) (except wp-config.php and if there is one the .htaccess) with the files present in the wordpress.zip file offered on www.remarpro.com

Also, did you try turning off all your plugins (who knows, if you have a security plugin getting in the way of logging in) ?

Thanks for the reply Sabinoo, I renamed the plugin folder in my cpanel and voila! i could enter the dashboard. Now all plugins have been inactivated. How do I identify which one is at fault?

I renamed the plugin folder back to plugins. All the plugins came back. Activated each one by one and the peculiar thing is that even after including all of them the problem has not recurred. Does anybody have an explanation?

Spoke too soon. Shall try and go over each and every step tomorrow. Too late in India and time to sleep. My question still remains – How do I identify which plugin is the culprit?
    Thanks in advance

Whichever one causes the problem – activate one by one so you can identify it.

Sometimes the problem may not occur again – so perhaps it was just a fluke. It happens, plugins can do funny stuff – as can other parts of WP and servers.

Thanks for your help Sabinoo and WPyogi. I nailed it down to Limit attempts plugin that was merely doing its job. Now I have to figure out a way to add myself as an exception. They have a whitelist for IP addresses that are excluded by my ISP assigns a variable IP address, so on to the plugin site to find an answer
Thanks once again for the help offered.
