I have seen numerous past postings raising this same issue, but it seems to persist.

I have registered for a free license using four different email addresses. On the same browser I use for everything (Chrome, fully updated), I have tried with no success to use the “Install my license automatically” button. Even though it has been less than three hours since I obtained the licenses, all fail with the message “This link has either expired or is being accessed using a different browser than the one used to request it. You may still manually install the requested license by entering the license key provided in the email into the “License Key” field on the installation page of the Wordfence plugin.”

In every case I have also tried to use the provided key and the related email address to install the license manually. In every case there is an error message:

    Error Installing License

We received an error while trying to activate the license with the Wordfence servers: There was an error connecting to the Wordfence scanning servers: cURL error 7:

Please try again. If the problem persists, please contact Wordfence Support

I have used Wordfence on my other WordPress sites for many years without problems. I am a relatively sophisticated user. It seems like there is a problem with the WordPress license validation servers. If the previous posts about this problem are any indication, however, Wordfence will vehemently deny that anything is wrong.

To clarify, I can “install” the plugin but I cannot activate it with the license key.

Hi @voiceguy, Thank you for reaching out.

Can you try deleting the Wordfence plugin and reinstalling it? You may have to remove all the tables and data when it asks you as well.

You can also troubleshoot this by disabling all plugins except for Wordfence and reverting temporarily to a default theme. If you can now confirm the installation, re-enable your plugins and theme one-by-one to see whether problems with Wordfence return, and which plugin might be the cause.

    Thanks,

    Mark.

    No joy.

    Deleted existing Wordfence plugin.

    Deactivated other plugins.

Reinstalled Wordfence using the “Add plugin” feature.

Tried my existing license. Received same error message as before. Requested a new license and tried that. Again, received the same error message as before “We received an error while trying to activate the license with the Wordfence servers: There was an error connecting to the Wordfence scanning servers: cURL error 7:”

Does your activation require that the WordPress installation be at the root level of the web address? In other words, is it not happy that I have this WordPress installation in a subdirectory (one level down) for development purposes? The WordPress installation itself is readily visible by following the path to this subdirectory.

    Hi @voiceguy,

A cURL error 7 often indicates that communication to our servers and back to your site cannot happen at all. This error number can be solved from the hosts’ end, so it might be worth checking in with their support channels to see whether they can communicate with?noc1.wordfence.com?or whether this is blocked at their end.

Additionally, can you send the diagnostic report to?wftest @ wordfence . com? You can find the link to do so at the top of the?Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics?page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”.?Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

NOTE: It should look as follows – Screenshot of Tools > Diagnostic > Send by Email

    Thanks,
    Mark.
