cannot install multisite mode on add-on domains

    As I have about 30 short review WordPress blogs, some days ago I decided to get them together and set up the subdomain multisite mode on my three separate domains, located with JustHost provider – one as my primary domain and two as add-on domains. I created a blogs.dir directory in each blog, set up wildcard subdomains with my cPanel and made necessary alterations in config.php and .htaccess files according to www.remarpro.com instructions.

    My primary domain accepted installation of multisite mode normally and it works OK now.

    As for my two add-on domains, they refused to work properly. They created virtual subdomains (websites) with Admin Panel, but the contents of these websites are not recorded in the body of the blogs. Therefore there is nothing to edit or to visit as website with Admin Panel. In the browser I can find my urls addresses, but not with the contents of my websites, but with Just Host advertisements, that is typical for an internal server problem. Besides, if in my primary domain I could see some folders with files in the blogs,dir directory; in my add-on domains I can see absolutely empty blogs.dir directories.

    I addressed to JustHost Support to help me resolving this problem, but they could not do it.

    That’s why now I decided to ask forum members to help me to find the way out of my problem.

    Who can help me?

    I actually don’t know what you mean here….

    addon.com works

    subdomain.addon.com shows … what? A blank page? A server error?

    It’s nice that you agreed to help me.

    While installing a new subdomain website into the net with Admin Panel (I mean an add-on domain), I can see the notice “The site is created”. But when I try to edit this newly created site to fill it with the content, I see the notice:

    “Internal Server Error
    The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
    Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.”

    At last, when I insert the url address of my newly created site into the browser, I can see the advertising page of my host provider. You can see it yourself if use the real address site1.howtomakemoney.bz or site2.howtomakemoney.bz.

    As for the main website howtomakemoney.bz of the net, it works OK (add-on domain).

    The primary installed domain tcherm.com works OK both as main website and its subdomain websites (you can see tcherm.com, site1.tcherm.com and site2.tcherm.com).

    You need to ask your webhost “How do I make subdomains for my add-on domain?”

    Because every host is a bit different ??

    They have instruction how to make usual subdomains. We are speaking not about creating common subdomains,but about creating multisite blog with virtual subdomains on add-on domain. They confess me that they practically have nothing about this matter. That’s why I have to address to you to receive some practical prompts to try solving this problem myself.

    It’s really the same thing.

    When you make a subdomain, you’re (generally) given the option of where you want it to point to. Like when I make mine, they default to /public_html/subdomain or /home/username/subdomain.domain.com/

    Depends on your host. So please understand that I can only talk in broad, general, terms ?? Every host is a little different.

    Here’s how it works on one of my hosts:

    Main domain (ipstenu.org): /home/username/public_html/
    Virtual subdomain (photos.ipstenu…): /home/username/public_html/
    Add-on domain (helf.us): /home/username/public_html/helf.us

    By a logical extension, if I wanted to make foo.helf.us, I would create that subdomain and point it at /home/username/public_html/helf.us

    What you have done is create a functional subdomain. What I do not know is where you pointed it. If you point it, correctly, at the same location on your server where your addon domain is installed, then you’re fine.

    You may not be able to use wildcard subdomains on an add-on. Not all hosts support that. However if they support subdomains on add-on domains (and please understand, this is DIFFERENT from normal subdomains), then you should be able to manually do this ??

    I don’t know for sure, because I do not know your host, or actually what you did.
