I’m trying to install the free version of Wordfence on a WP 6.2.2 site – I’ve done this in the past on other sites and have had no difficulty. I got the error “An error occurred while installing your license key”. I tried again, no dice. Thinking this key is one I requested a few weeks ago and might be expired, I requested another one. Same problem. There is no other information with the error message as to the possible cause. I was very careful in pasting in my email and key and know they are correct. What’s the next step I should try?

Hi @glatz2crs, sorry to see you’re having this issue with one of your sites.

Have you also exhausted the troubleshooting steps on this page?: https://www.wordfence.com/help/api-key/#installing-your-free-license-key

I only ask the above to ensure I don’t skip anything in the link above, although it does look like a possible communication problem when verifying the key with our servers. You should still have access to the Wordfence > Tools menu to send us a diagnostic report so we can take a closer look at why you might be getting a 403 response. You can send that to us at wftest @ wordfence . com. Click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

NOTE: It should look as follows – Screenshot of Tools > Diagnostic > Send by Email

    Thanks,
    Peter.

Hi wfpeter, thanks for your help. I figured out the issue; is was a mu-plugin I was testing that was forcing WordFence to be activated when it shouldn’t have been, and it wreaked havoc with the install process. My dumb mistake!

Good to know about the tools screen. Thanks for your great support.
