I installed and activated WP media player, but no change. Was this not a good plugin? Can you suggest one?
    Thanks

Still no change. I think we may be going the wrong way here.
The video I want to embed has been uploaded to my WP blog and I have pasted the URL – https://webvideocash.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/webvideocash.wmv – to the page I want it to embed on (I am trying to have the local video embed instead of the You Tube embed I have now). But all I see is the local URL. I suspect I am doing something else wrong. Can you have a look at https://webvideocash.net/ and advise?
    Thanks

You can not just insert the URL. That is all it will do is create a link. Same goes if you use add media from URL which is really for Youtube.
There are dozens plugins that will make what you want easy to do. Just search for embed videos.

Actually you can embed video from a url- since 2.9. See this

Just not sure why I cannot….

Sorry. Think you misunderstood the post you are referring to and the embed feature in general.
Basically the embed feature only works with certain video/image providers that use an “oEmbed” protocol like youtube, dailymotion, vimeo (mentioned in the post), flickr and a few others. There is a list of providers someplace (I don’t have) but you could try google for it. Does not have to be a WP list. Be aware any list is never complete.
If the link you enter does not support the oEmbed protocol then WP will only give a link, which is what you are getting.
Am not an expert but used the protocol for an application I wrote. The link like the standard youtube.com link is able through the protocol to then return info in text format for height, width, url (for the content), format and other things. That stuff is used to be able to play the video or show the image.
Hope that helps. But to do what you want you will need a plugin of which there are several.

ok, I obviously misunderstood. Thanks for clarifying!

I am also having a problem with the oEmbed feature. I am using links from both YouTube and Vimeo, which are both on the approved sites list, but instead of embedding the video it just shows the link.

    Any ideas?
