Cannot find index.php

I have no idea which version of WP I am using, I recently started a site, so I am assuming that I have the most recent version. All of the advice tells me to look in places I can’t find, or if I can, it gives the template name, not the version. HOWEVER, that is not my question. I want to remove the date of the post on the front page of my site, as it is not going to be used as a blog. However, all of the information that I find in the forums tells me to “simply” go to the index.php. I cannot find the index.php, and the instructions that I have found in other forums DO. NOT. WORK. I am extremely frustrated, this should not be so hard. HELP!!!!!
