Cannot establish link to product image

I’ve read everything here. Latest version of the plugin, installed today. Theme is current Customizr.
For the product, the Screen Options are ENABLED and the “Set Product Image” link is VISIBLE and works, so then I select the image (577 x 866) in the Media Library, and when I return to the product page it is not displayed in the right column and also not on the front-end.
I cannot find a reference to maximum file sizes or dimensions.
