    This morning I reactivated the plugin (had turned it off to try other plugins) and the Create New Empty Album button worked! So, I think this is resolved, tho not sure what happened.

    Could be that the installation/activation process took too long to complete before timeout. WP is working on improvements to the plugin install/update process.
