I maintain our Church website, using FrontPage. I would like to convert to WordPress, but need to retain the old site until I build the new one. Therefore, I am trying to install WordPress on the host server – Register.com – along with my FrontPage site.

I have created an SQL database, which is located in the databases folder of the root directory. I have loaded WordPress into a “blog” subdirectory in the public folder. I have double-checked all the entries in my wp-config.php file and they seem to be correct. However, when I go to install.php in my browser I get the “Error establishing a database connection” msg.

I have read everything I can find in the forums and realize many other people have had this sort of problem in the past. However, nothing I have tried from previous threads has helped. I apologize for bringing up such an old problem again, but really need some help.

    Thanking you in advance,

    Cheers,

Try asking your hosts for assistance.

I am having a similar problem. I can’t install WP although database details are correct in config.php. Please tell me what to do as support at my host doesn’t seem to understand the issue. I first installed using Fantastico but that installed but without an RSS folder. Host had no idea what I was on about so I said I would install manually and see if that helped. But it won’t install manually at all.

Thanks, Esmi, but the host will not help, saying they do not provide technical support for WP.

It’s fixed! I did finally get the host tech team to help me. The basic problem was that ‘localhost’ was not the address to use. I found the correct address in my database management control panel. To compound my problem, I had made a mistake in my database user name (one that I missed after checking it umpteen times.)

Now to learn more of the wonders of WP.
