    Hi,

I’m having an issue with Jetpack. I’ve just installed Jetpack after not using it for quite a while, and have found that once installed, I can link to my account on WordPress with no issues (axemanbob), But cannot change any settings at all. This includes activating the recommended features when I first install. I’m on the latest wordpress, and the latest version of Jetpack, and running PhP7.1 on the server side. I have tried deactivating all other plugins, with no change. I have also tried deleting and reinstalling Jetpack multiple times.

Oddly, the error I get depends upon the browser I use. In Safari, when I change any settings, the switch changes state, and I get ‘Updating Settings…’ but that message just stays there and the settings never actually change. If I refresh the page the setting switch is back to what it was.

In Chrome, I get a different error – ‘Error updating settings. FetchNetworError’. In that case, the setting switch never actually changes state. In both cases, settings never actually change.

I know that an earlier version of Jetpack worked fine, but it has been quite a while since I last used it (a couple of years maybe?).

    Really hope you can help…

    Thanks in advance.

Update: I’ve just tried the debug tool, and it’s giving me the ‘We were unable to make an XML-RPC request to your website’ error.

However, I’ve been through the troubleshooting, and I don’t seem to have any issues when I manually test the XML-RPC.php via manual entry into a browser, or via the validation service.

As far as I understand, Jetpack is connected successfully (it does appear in the debug tool, and doesn’t give an error when connecting the account on install).

Have now also tried a basic theme, as well as checking site speed and SSL certs. All have been okay.

    Confused!

Hi @axemanbob, and thanks for the thorough explanation of the issue!

Even though there were errors preventing Jetpack from communicating with your site, everything does seem to be working properly now. You can check the latest debug looking good:

I hope you’re not experiencing this issue anymore. Please monitor the situation in the next couple of days and let me know whether you experience and problems.

All in all, let me know how it goes and whether I can assist further. Cheers ??

    HI Stef,

Unfortunately, the issue not being able to change any settings and getting the error is still there. That hasn’t changed at all.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

Hi there again, and thanks for trying that out.

Can you confirm that the issue is happening only on your wp-admin dashboard? Does it happen also when trying to change the settings on your blue WordPress.com dashboard?

All in all, that sounds like a potential plugin clash. Can you please temporarily deactivate all your plugins and check if the problem gets fixes that way? If it works, then reactivate each plugin one-by-one to find out which one is causing problems.

Let me know how you get on!

    Hi Stef,

I mentioned in my first post that I’ve tried deactivating all other plugins, and it didn’t make any difference.

I must admit I didn’t realise I could change the settings from WordPress.com. Strangely, this seems to work – in general – (and the toggle switch is also changed on my wp-admin dashboard to match). However, the setting doesn’t actually seem to take effect (in particular I was testing the galleries enhancement). Also, even changing the setting on WordPress.com threw up intermittent errors (erred with “There was a problem saving your changes. Please try again.” about 30% of the time, but try again, and it’d work).

So, I’m not sure that the settings are actually taking, even though the toggle switch is changing on my wp-admin dash if I change it on WP.com. Also, I still cannot actually change it in my wp-admin dashboard…!

To cut a long story short, despite trying deactivation of all other plugins, jetpack settings within wp-admin still give me the error, and changing the settings on WP.com seems to toggle the switches, but the settings don’t actually seem to take effect…

Okay… another update… settings sort of seem to be taking if changed on WP.com I think…!

Would still prefer to be able to change things within wp-admin though… currently feels like a broken solution… any idea?

    Thanks.

    Hey there,

Okay… another update… settings sort of seem to be taking if changed on WP.com I think…!

That’s a good start, at least we know you can access to that through the WordPress.com dashboard.

Would still prefer to be able to change things within wp-admin though… currently feels like a broken solution… any idea?

Can you look at the browser Console and check whether you spot any errors at all in there?

At this point, I’d like to run some more tests with you on your site to try to figure out what’s happening. Could you contact us via this contact form and mention this thread? That’d be better as the outcome may include some sensitive data we don’t want to share publicly.

Thanks a lot for your cooperation while working on this!

I has the same issue – trying to update Jetpack’s settings from wp-admin was causing an error message: “Error updating settings. FetchNetworError”

For me, it was an SSL issue. Chrome inspector said Jetpack was trying to load content over http. I installed Really Simple SSL plugin an the problem ws resolved.

    Thank you!

    Thanks a lot @imfromio

Your comment got me off the frustration I was having.

I disabled really simple SSL because it was clashing with another plugin. I had no issues with SSL since my site goes through Cloudflare.

When I discovered jetpack was not working, I had no idea what caused it, I had contacted support, uninstall and installed my plugins one after the other and involved a freelancer developer. then I saw your comment re-installed really Simple SSL…everything is working smoothly now. Thanks again.
