I have given wp-content recursive write permissions. I know that’s working because WP is able to write to at least three different subs of content: uploads, upgrade, and tmp. It can also write to the content folder itself (based on my test of the tmp directive above). I have confirmed that plugins is correctly inheriting the write permissions.

Anything else? Still a little confused.

(I have had to create both upgrade and uploads manually in spite of my having given recursive write permissions to my wp-content directory.)

I had to give Modify rights (sorry, was thinking like a linux admin for a moment there) to the wp-content folder in order for deletion to take place. (It also happened to fix a totally unrelated issue with my not being able to change my header color.) Now the upgrades work as expected.

Since WP is able to delete also the files it downloads there is no reason to employ the tmp solution provided above.

I will do a full blog post on this later and post that link here.

I’ve got this same problem since the upgrade to WP 2.8.

Shouldn’t have to CHMOD, create directories or anything else. The automatic update is a feature of WP, and the feature should work.

Why doesn’t it? I don’t see any solution here or anywhere else.

when i try to upgrade its ask hostname what i will put on there ftp name or there???

I’ve got this same problem since the upgrade to WP 2.8.

    x2…help appreciated!
