At the end of a new post, I tried to insert a new gallery but got a message that said:

This block has encountered an error and cannot be previewed

I tried different locations with the same result. I switched to the classic editor, inserted the gallery without a problem, then switched back to the block editor. The gallery came in as shortcode and it properly displays the images.

Then, I edited an existing post with a NextGEN Gallery at the end and I found the same message where the gallery was. Needless to say, I immediately left the edit window. This is a screen capture:

My WordPress and all the plugins are updated to the latest versions. This problem is a bit nerve-wracking with over 500 galleries on my site!

    Thank you,

    Cemal

  • I also have this error with NextGen galleries on theme Photocrati Pro Version: 5.0.8. It has screwed most of my web pages. although some still display grid-style galleries, none of the slide-show/filmstrip formats work. Removing and reinstating the block also produces this error and I have a crucial page which I can’t get a nextgen block onto at all now. All plug-ins and wordpress version up to date as of today (which caused the problem).

    URGENT help required!

    Thanks

Without pro or plus version in my case. It is possible that NGG is having this problem because of some core WP or other plugins, even the themes in use but everything else seems to be behaving as expected.

The problem is actually worse than I first thought. Not only can I not add galleries using the block editor, but many inserted galleries now appears as a one-line text:

    We cannot display this gallery.

This is one of the problems of heavily relying on some resources. When they fail, everything falls apart.

I hope there will be a solution VERY SOON.

If I edit the post, switch to the classic editor, recheck NGG, update the post, the gallery returns. Switching back to the block editor produces the same error box, sometimes it converts the block as a classic block!

    Hi @acekin, @anniega,

We do apologize for the inconveniences created with NextGen’s Insert Gallery Window.

There is a known problem with NextGen Gallery Gutenberg block on WordPress.com sites ( it works fine on the www.remarpro.com sites ). This issue will be fixed in the next plugin update.

In the meantime you can use Classic Editor ( plugin ) to be able to insert NextGen galleries into posts and pages.

But, my site is not on WordPress.com, it is a self-hosted site. The same problem happens on a staging site I have, again, self hosted. So, this is a different problem from the one you implied in the answer.

    Good Morning.

The problem occurs with the latest JetPack update.

If you install it, this update damages the Guten block system.

Disable JetPack by WordPress and try again

Thank you all, I have now got my webhost to restore the backup before the various updates I did foolishly in bulk. All is well now and I will wait for the update which fixes this before attempting again.

    Hello @acekin,

We wanted to know if you tried to deactivate Jetpack as @jorensanbar suggested.d
    Please, keep us posted.
If the problem persists we need to escalate this back to the developers.

Yes, I disabled JetPack on my staging site and NextGEN block appeared in the block editor as expected. Should I report this to JetPack support? I will try to get the previous version of JetPack and install it. Also thanks to @jorensanbar for pointing us in the right direction.

    Thanks,

    Cemal

Please do, @gabyimagely, we have had a few steps taken. Some productive, some not.

We found that there is an existing bug with Jetpack.
This one was already reported to the developers. We want to thank @acekin for taking the time to escalate this back to the support team.

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

@gabyimagely Hi! I work on the Jetpack plugin, and we’ve been discussing the issues @acekin found in this GitHub issue:
    https://github.com/Automattic/jetpack/issues/17444

He mentioned that one of the issues (the NextGEN block not working well when Jetpack is installed) was fixed on his site with the latest Beta version of the NextGEN gallery plugin. Is that Beta version available somewhere for me to test with, and is there a GitHub repository where I could learn more about the conflict, so we can maybe avoid this in the future?

    Thank you!
