Cannot Access WP-Admin

  • Hi there,

    I have been searching the forums for a fix for this and while I have found people with a similar problem to this, I haven’t found anyone so far who have had this current issue.

    I upgraded my www.remarpro.com site (www.anastasiacatris.com) to the most recent WP upgrade the other day and almost immediately got a message saying:

    “Database Update Required

    WordPress has been updated! Before we send you on your way, we have to update your database to the newest version.

    The update process may take a little while, so please be patient.”

    I clicked to upgrade the database but was sent to a page with the WP logo where nothing happened. This same thing happened on several attempts even when waiting for several hours at a time (as it told me to be patient after all).

    I searched for similar problems and found Esmi’s responses to similar queries:

    – switching to the Twenty Twelve theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

    I followed this advice and now, not only am I not able to access the back end of my site, but I my site is completely broken and results turn in a blank page!

    As you can imagine, I am quite worried about this as I use my site for work purposes (it has an online store and promotes my work to several businesses who I am currently being reviewed by).

    Any help you could offer in this situation would be most beneficial, I am sure.

    I used the FTP method described here But, obviously, as I was unable to access my wp-admin to fulfill Step 3, maybe this would have been an issue?

    When you get a blank page like that it means your PHP interpreter is tossing errors. Do you have access to your web server’s error log file? That may tell you what’s causing that blank page.

    Also which steps have you tried? I mean did you rename the plugins and/or themes directories? Knowing that may help figure out where you are and how to get you back to running again.

    Hi Jan,

    I tried all of the steps described in my post above and none of them seemed to work resulting in this error. I’ll check and see if I have access to my server’s error log file now.

    Okay, just changed my theme back to my personalized Athena theme and the site is up and running again at least (phew!) but I am still getting the Database message when I try to log in to my wp-admin. This takes me to the WordPress logo and nothing happens after that.

    That’s an improvement! Now to work on your database upgrade issue.

    When you visit https://www.anastasiacatris.com/wp-admin/ you get the upgrade notice, you click the button, and then just get the logo.

    Can you look into your web server’s error log file to see if something is breaking during those steps?

    I’m afraid I’m not amazingly web-literate, but I found that this repeated in my server’s error log every time I tried to download the current database upgrade.

    [Wed Jun 26 12:31:19 2013] [warn] RewriteCond: NoCase option for non-regex pattern ‘-f’ is not supported and will be ignored.

    Don’t know if that helps?

    I’m pretty sure that’s not it but try this: in your root directory should be a .htaccess file. Rename that file into .htaccess-old (don’t delete it) and visit https://www.anastasiacatris.com/wp-admin/ one more time.

    Do the upgrade. If it hangs on the logo again then rename the .htaccess-old back to .htaccess.

    If it works the rename that file anyways. ?? I don’t think it will fix it but eliminating items from the list of suspects like that may help.

    For some reason my FTP has decided it can’t connect to the server atm :/ Will give this a go as soon as I have got access again. Thank you x

    If that doesn’t work there’s other things that can be tried to create a log of any errors.

    What you want to do is find out why the upgrade is failing so that it can be fixed properly.

    Finally managed to get back into my FTP. Can’t seem to find the .htaccess file though

    Okay, finally found it. Changed it to .htaccess-old and it still hangs on the upgrade screen.

    Have also disabled all plugins and this has done nothing except, well, make my site a bit ugly at the moment (front page uses a lot of plugins) :/ Can’t wait to get back into it so I can fix this mess.

    Oh… and now all of my other pages aren’t working. They all turn up a 404 file not found…

    Do you have access to your WP dashboard yet?

    No. Still can’t get past the database update page.
