• Hello,

I’m trying to help a friend with the updates to 4.7.5, I’m getting “Could not create directory. Installation Failed”. I understood it’s something related to directories permissions but I cannot check because I don’t have FTP access. I’m getting “Response: 530 Login authentication failed”. The person owning the site didn’t access it via FTP, at least he didn’t do it.

Could you please let me know what should I do? Since automatic update it’s not working, I need to do it manually but without FTP access I’m stuck.

Thank you in advance for your help.

  • Contact hosting provider where that website is hosted and obtain FTP credentials.

    Hey @catalinciubotariu,

    To add to that…

The WordPress updater from within WordPress uses the same type of FTP connection you would need to manually upgrade using an FTP client, like Filezilla.
It is very likely that the upgrades from within WordPress are failing because WordPress does not have the correct FTP credentials set or the folder permissions are not setup correctly.

Unfortunately, the only way to make the upgrade is to contact the hosting provider and obtain the correct FTP host and login to move forward.

If after you get the proper FTP credentials you are still having issues, feel free to post a follow-up here ??

    Hi jordanwpcom,

I had the impression that wordpress is hosting the website but apparently not. My confusion, thanks for letting me know.
