Cannot access my dashboard, anymore

  • I know it says, “easy 5-min.install”. Right now my frustration level is rising steadily. All I know is that I have to solve what I’m doing wrong. I started the process about 3 weeks ago and about 3 days ago, using a web-based how-to. Managed to get to my dashboard, for the site. But, although I could view a blog in preview it would not publish. The advice I first received on this forum, suggested that I re-load a copy minus the wp-content folder.

    In doing so I thought I would take the opportunity to make a user in my database, one that had a more appropriate username. So, I changed my wp-config file and uploaded. Now the config file seems to have the correct info, vis-a-vis, the new username and the password. However I’m now locked out of my dashboard, with the screen that tells me either my server is down or the config file is missing. btw. server’s not down.

    So my question is, can either point me to or help me understand? How can I either start-over the process; or what I need to do to re-establish my connection to my dashboard?

    The original user for my database, I deleted, …… silly boy ……… how can I get WP to recognize this new database user? The info within wp-config seems to be correct? Do I start the whole thing over? If so, how do I go about the process? Or is it a matter of changing the user back, to reflect the original user? ….. call me “totally frustrated”! Cheers!

    Will it matter if the database and the user use the same name? That’s how I started the whole thing. Do I need to re-upload that file even if the text entered is not changed? Do I need to create another user? Everything appears to be correct between, ‘ and ‘ my password appears to be correct. What would be the best way to restore, please? Lastly, is there any limit to uploading the “config” file, provided the information is correct and then being able to access the dashboard? Thanks and cheers!

    Whoops, I also meant to ask. If another user is created for the database, is a different password required for each user? Or is the password irrelevant provided the config file has it; in the right place? Thanks!

    you can create another user with same pass – be sure you grant this user all rights and make sure wp-config.php has these exact same details

    Okay, that’s straight forward. After I’ve uploaded that file, do I use my previous bookmark to access dashboard? Or do I need to use a different URL address; to access dashboard? If multiple users are on that database is there a different config file for each user? Or does the one on the server re-adjusted with strings for each user? Cheers!

    We were able to connect to the database server (which means your username and password is okay) but not able to select the wrd_de5lf5h5ek database.

    Are you sure it exists?
    Does the user wrdjFAnAOwu have permission to use the wrd_de5lf5h5ek database?
    On some systems the name of your database is prefixed with your username, so it would be like username_wrd_de5lf5h5ek. Could that be the problem?
    If you don’t know how to set up a database you should contact your host.

    Hi claro03,

    Thank you for your help and advice. I’m sorry but I missed this post, until today. I can access my dashboard now. I had some help from my server admin.

    I still have a, big? …. to me it’s big, problem getting the plugins to download. The message after it fails, is that it could not create the directory /home/username/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wp-e-commerce/

    Yet, my cPanel shows the folder in the path. All attempts to download a plugin have failed. With the same message.

    I thought I was through with this help forum, once dashboard was running?

    I can see the folder wp-content. Inside are 2 folders; plugins and themes. But there is also another folder marked wordpress 2 which has all of the same folders inside including another wp-content folder. Inside that folder are the 2 folders plugins and themes and another file marked index.php

    That wordpress 2 folder seems to contain all of the other files and folders that are in my cPanel string; from public_html down.

    Hi just read your post. Firtly YEs it i a 5 minute install.

    The biggest problem seems to be your hosting provider not providing you with the correct access to files and folders e.g. CHMOD are wrong

    I would suggest you leave this host and go to one that is more WP user friendly.
