Cancelled Status

Hi,
I have a question regarding Reservations Statuses, specifically the Cancelled status.
We are receiving a large number of Cancelled Reservations notifications.
What conditions have to exist for a Reservation to be Cancelled?
Does the Reservation have to be manually Cancelled or does the status of the Reservation automatically change to Cancelled if it is not Completed manually?Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
