Can you set a component so that stock of baseproduct is not affected?

Is it possible to have a component with no stock management and baseproduct with stock management? There is a component (rope or string) where the user can choose from several colors, but the amount is not enough to let the stock diminish by 1.
The baseproduct has stock inventory, but the component does’nt need stock inventory. So we set the quantity for the component to zero. But then the component doesn’t show up in the cart or in the order.
