Can Taxonomy singular and plural labels be same?

I created custom taxonomy in which I used “status” as both singular and plural for taxonomy label. No warnings as I did this, but when using that, I got invalid parameter(s) status error (no more info after status message) when editing post.

As soon as I created a taxonomy with distinct singular and plural names, it worked again.

So is it required to have distinct singular and plural names for labels?
