My client wants these photos to be organized within albums, so a viewer can click on ‘2023 photos’ or ‘2022 photos’ and within those albums they can see daily albums. Is there a way to do this?

Here is how it’s set up on her current SmugMug link: https://k9kaos.smugmug.com/

Your client is using folders, and Photonic supports SmugMug folders – you can pick the appropriate option while building your gallery. You cannot make an arbitrary setup in Photonic – it will only respect the setup you have in SmugMug itself.

I tried that, and it seems like that should work, but I got a ‘not found’ message when I tried to choose any gallery option using folders.

I will have to investigate this, since this is the first time I see an error with a user id failing get a tree listing. What if you directly create a shortcode in your post in the following manner?

    [gallery type='smugmug' nick_name='k9kaos' view='tree']

    Does that work?

Nope, that didn’t work. It kept loading for a long time until I got an error message:

There was an error connecting to smug. Please try again later.

I tried this particular user id with a timeout of 60 seconds, and it still times out. I bumped it up to 120 seconds, and this time it did not time out. However, it still did not generate an output. This takes me back to my original point about requiring to investigate why this particular user id is behaving this way.

The API timeout error occurs not just on Photonic, but also directly on SmugMug – I guess this has something to do with the high number of albums (3977) and a high degree of nesting, which causes a heavy load for the API.

I may be able to investigate the issue next week. So, I am sorry, but as of now, I don’t think there is a way to support your requirement for this user id.

Sorry, this took a lot longer to resolve due to my day job getting quite busy.

As I had suspected, the culprit here was the abnormally high number of albums that this user id has. So I had to come up with a bit of a workaround for this. I have introduced a new option, Photonic Settings SmugMug Advanced Tree Nesting Levels. From testing with your user id, I found that even 2 levels of nesting cause SmugMug’s API to crash. But, if you set the number of levels to 1, in the Wizard you will see your top-level folders, such as 2023. You can then use those to create your galleries.
