• Good day all
I’m working on a clients site that was moved to a new server. I restored the site from a BackWP backup, with database and all files.

Only the homepage is showing. I am unable to access any other pages.
I can not access the WP login either (unless typed directly into the address bar). However, that page does not look right (missing CSS it seems) and once submitted I also get the 500 internal error shown everywhere else.

My searching shows this is likely due to the permalinks, but I’m not able to access the admin panel to confirm this. I have tried the site with and without the .htaccess (which does contain a rewrite). Suggested solutions on other responses suggest that removing htaccess and then saving the current permallinks settings again would recreate things normally.

Would this work? If so, how would I access the admin panel?
If this is also to do with mod-rewrite on apache, is there a way to tell?

    Thank you in advance! ??

  • Is you hoster strato? I had the same yesterday.
I renamed the plugin folder in wp_contents to plugin.deactivate and could login again.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
No, not with Strato. And this was after a full site move from one host to another. Unfortunately, I was only involved after the move. And the site was fully restored from a database and file backup, onto the new host.

try to rename the plugin folder
    edit:
may also be a theme problem:

    No luck
It still seems to rewriting the URL that I submit to, from the login page (which still seems to be lacking any CSS, likely due to rewrites / redirects)

Thank you, I shall do and post the outcome.
I do think it is the permalinks that are causing the issue, somewhere.
[edit] No luck, and they are not yet running the latest WordPress. I believe it is still 4.9.10[/edit]

Sorta. Try renaming .htaccess to .htaccess-save and then clear your browser’s cache and cookies and try to log into your site again.

The /wp-login.php and /wp-admin URLs don’t use pretty permalinks so the rewrite rules should not cause a problem.

Good to know they don’t use permalinks.

Will do a full browser cache empty

Still no luck logging in. The login page still posts to a rewritten URL, so I’m guessing there is an issue elsewhere.

I’ve asked the web host to confirm if mod_rewrite is working

The server and browser cache have been cleared, and htaccess renamed (while testing) and still same issue, so the fault lies elsewhere, but still something to do with rewriting
