Can not leave comments – comments don't save for display

    Summary: The comment form is displayed on every post. If a person attempts to leave a comment, they are taken to a “404 Not Found” page with “https://elinks.info/wp-comments-post.php” showing in the URL bar. The comments they entered do not show in the control panel under “comments”.

    I have researched this on wp and the internet. I found a few other instances and have tried every fix found. Here is what I have done so far.

    Comments PREVIOUSLY worked, and any comments left on the site appeared as pending comments in the control panel, just it is “supposed to work”. Then I changed Themes.

    Before I did any troubleshooting and tests, I changed to new theme AGAIN, because the problem appeared after changing the theme, and I assumed at first, that it was theme related. That did not solve the problem.

    1. Deactivate all plugins; rename the folder; re-enter “plugins” section in wp so that it sees all plug-ins were gone. Then try to leave comments.
    This didn’t work

    2. change to default theme (standard 2015). Then try to leave comments.
    This didn’t work

    3. remove htaccess file completely. Then try to leave comments.
    This didn’t work

    4. reset permalinks; changed permalinks to something else; didn’t work and didn’t work.

    5. modify htaccess with hints from web on allow and deny instructions. Then try to leave comments.
    This didn’t work

    6. update to latest version of wordpress in control panel (only 1 version away – moved to 4.4.1). Then try to leave comments.
    This didn’t work

    7. copy new version of wp-comments-post.php, which is the file that was displayed each time adding comments failed and returned a 404. Downloaded from the latest version of WP. (4.4.1?). Then try to leave comments.
    This didn’t work

    8. download complete version of wordpress. Copy over ALL files and folders EXCEPT wp-config file and WP-content folder … this makes the installation the same as a fresh installation. didn’t work. all plugsins are off except clicky. still giving same 404 not found error at wp-comments-post.php

    9. Checked the database and found no errors.
    [elinks_wp.wp_comments] status: OK

    10. Perform repair the database and no errors.
    [elinks_wp.wp_comments] status: OK

    Items 9 and 10 did not work to fix the problem. Still can’t get comments to be accepted/saved to the database.

    Can anyone please point me in new directions? I have run out of ideas.

    My host replied:

    there was a WordPress protection enabled in the apache configuration on the server. At this time the WordPress protection is disabled. Which looked to be the root cause of the issues you were reporting.

    After this was done, posting of comments was again permitted.
