    Browser’s back button should work.

If not, then you could use a lightbox plugin to show the images in a page or post using a lightbox. My current favourite is jQuery Colorbox since it supports NGG and contains several “themes” (skins) to match your site’s styling better.

NextGEN Gallery 2.0.37 should also show page/post images in its lightbox, but it does not in every case – and I do not know why. So I continue using an external lightbox as long as the page/post image box lightbox works.

@iphonefreak – Can you provide a link to your site where this is happening?

There may also be a conflict with another plugin, have you checked that?

    – Cais.

At my NGG testsite this page https://bisnes-it.com/wordpress-ngg-test/?page_id=75#gallery shows two single images, one inserted using a shortcode, the other using WP’s Add Media. Both show correctly in either with Pro Lightbox or Basic NGG’s thickbox. With earlier NGG & Pro versions only the one added using shortcode was showing in lightbox.

But for example on my personal site (see e.g. this post with several images: https://www.tiirikainen.fi/wordpress/?p=5050) clicking the images (inserted with Add Media & linked to the image file) would show them in full size on a black page. Because of this I use jQuery Colorbox so users can browse the images and have easier control.

Click on one of the pictures. You can not go back.
And also, how do I stack the images up side by side?

This is a bit strange behaviour and basically should not happen even at the earliest NGG 2.0.x releases. Found a way to go back to your previous page by clickin browser’s “back” button and refreshing the page. This strange backing combined with your page’s source code I would suspect there is a conflict with another plugin, possibly fp responsive slider.

Could you test whether the galleries will work ok when you deactivate this plugin, and possibly other plugins if that can’t help? If the reason is fp slider, you may try another free slider, Meteor Slides which works fine with current NGG releases.

The slider is built into the code.

Hopefully the dev can release a fix.
    I will try the plugins

I have deactivated all plugins minus NGG and it did not fix the problem.
