• We have a website that has many links and we would love to also be able to replace links to language-specific links. Is this possible? Cheers!

I mean external links. Say we have a link to English Wikipedia. To be able to change to Spanish Wikipedia for example.

The short answer is yes, but the longer one is, yes but its hard.

There are shortcodes allowing you to set content in any specific language, they can also be used in urls and so (we use it to get the proper facebook box on our site).

Wikipedia links are also quite tricky as its not just about setting one parameter. so our suggestion, use the relevant shortcodes.

    Ofer probably refers to this:

    https://trac.transposh.org/wiki/ShortCodes

(the wiki is kind of hidden, could use a link in the wp-admin, plugin’s description and transposh.org’s menu, me thinks)

Ok it does seem complicated. Do you plan to maybe make it more easily integrated into the front end? Would be super useful to be able to change the links too!

Hi @tiotrom , there are no short term plans to integrate this, do you have any idea regarding how this integration will look like? In a way that we’ll be able to support?

I’ll try. So when someone clicks to edit a hyperlinked text, to also see the option of replacing that link. Maybe this will create a class that forces that text to link to whatever it was specified by the translator. And you can make this feature optional (opt-in from dashboard – so admins can decide if they want this feature or not). We have several websites that are for our trade-free (nonprofit) projects and we really struggle with this. We have several translators who are always facing the issue of not being able to replace links. Besides this your plugin is simply brilliant and I want to thank you so much for it!

Any updates in regards to this? Cheers!

    Hello again,

I think it is probably a bit too complicated, replacing links the way you suggested is quite problematic since links may be hijacked and redirected to places sites never intended them to.

I try to avoid adding features which I believe will get misused/misunderstood and I’ll give you an example from the far past, in that past each language had two modes, translatable and viewable (use case, I have translated my site to language XX and want it translated to YY, I want to first translate and only then allow users to access YY), even this minor feature caused so many problems where people misunderstood, couldn’t differentiate, etc.

I am getting a few mails every months just about the meaning of the default language selection ??

I am really sorry about that, but since I have limited resources, I can’t commit to such a feature at this point in time, and although I understand its usefulness to you, it will probably just cause too much overhead and headaches to me

    Hi,

I totally understand you but it can be an option in the admin panel with a warning about the dangers. We are a group of volunteers and we translate our free projects but we cannot replace links. For us would be immensely useful.

If you are ever able to do it would be fantastic. I totally understand it is a lot of work and I wish you the best!

Thanks for your kind words, I’ll think about it…

I also want to encourage you, if you have the time and energy, to work on such a feature. It may be not only useful for us, but also for others. Thanks to your plugin I was able to translate a website into german to make it available for other people ?? I appreciate that.
