    Hi

I’m creating a new gallery from a NextGen gallery. Tried importing it but ended up with many failed images. I suspect these were the webp images in the NextGen gallery.

Does FooGallery support webp? If it does, is it ok to upload webp images to a new FooGallery?

Or do I need to upload all the images as .jpg or .png?

    hi @footy4kids,

FooGallery does not directly support WebP images, as they are not supported by default in WordPress.

WebP images are not supported in all browsers at the moment. This means you need to be clever in the way you serve your WebP images to the supported browsers, but fallback to the PNG or JPG versions in unsupported browsers.

If you just have WebP images in a gallery, then those images will not be visible for visitors using Safari and Internet Explorer (anywhere from 10% – 25% of your visitors depending on mobile / desktop).

There are solutions out there to add WebP support in WordPress : https://themeisle.com/blog/wordpress-image-optimizer-plugins-compared/

    Hi bradvin.

Thanks for getting back to me.

    That makes sense.

It sounds like I should upload standard jpegs (I use EWWW to optimise uploaded images) and enable retina support, not just upload webp images.

Can you give me any guidance as to what setting I should choose? 2x, 3x or 4x?

    hi @footy4kids

I would recommend you use 2x retina images. Visually, there is a big difference on retina devices for normal thumbs and retina thumbs

    Thanks!

@bradvin if enable retina images, does the plugin automatically save another image on the server? (potentially cost server space)
