Can I use this plugin without changing post types?

No, using the new version, you must switch things over to use the new post type otherwise the plugin will not work. You will need to configure things yourself to retain all the SEO and such you’ve setup. Good luck!

I see. No, this plugin isn’t ready for enterprise level environments. PCI compliance (federal law) requires any internet upgrade to 301 redirect changed permalinks as a part of the upgrade process to be compliant. PCI is all about minimizing security risks and disruptions to service.I couldn’t get a change control to even test it. It shows promise too ??

Please reconsider your position… I can’t use the product as is. I’m betting most other enterprise level clients can’t as well.

Lastly it makes no sense for things to be painful for legacy users (real supporters) versus new users. We are your base and it is very responsible to make any upgrade process easy and safe. It seems only new users can enjoy your product without adversely affecting their environment. Your current structure, destroys SEO, authority, inbound, links, and ultimately would destroy the Google Pagerank for upgrading websites. A site like ours which is only events posted in blog form would be utterly devastated. Your plugin would make upgrading event promoters harder to find. Hopefully the developer will think about this.

I do want to clear up a couple misconceptions here, though…mainly your claim that this plugin needs to be PCI compliant per federal law. If you check out this PCI Compliance Guide (https://www.pcicomplianceguide.org/) it specifies that:

PCI applies to ALL organizations or merchants, regardless of size or number of transactions, that accepts, transmits or stores any cardholder data. Said another way, if any customer of that organization ever pays the merchant directly using a credit card or debit card, then the PCI DSS requirements apply.

However, since The Events Calendar doesn’t involve financial transactions of any kind, it does not fall into that category.

You do make an excellent point about 301 redirects, though. While we didn’t have these in place for sites jumping from 1.x -> 2.0 (which was more than a year ago at this point), we are incorporating them for the impending 3.0 release.

Regarding your broader point about the switch from events as posts to a custom post type: this was a conscious decision we made based on feedback from the community and trends we saw regarding where the industry was going. Custom post types were increasingly the norm at the time we made this switch and we found users would by and large prefer to treat their events as a separate, custom post type loop that they could then integrate back into the main loop as they wanted to. The current releases offer a tutorial for how to do this; once 3.0 releases, there will be a setting that allows you to have your events appear in the main blog loop as well, to help users in your position recreate that original behavior as they see fit.

Hope this helps, and sheds some light on the process. I apologize on behalf of the whole team that the plugin in its current form wont meet your needs. Hopefully once 3.0 has launched, you’ll be interested in giving things another shot. Best of luck finding a calendar solution in the interim and please let me know if you have any other questions, thoughts or concerns.

Hi there, i downloaded the plugin just today. Reading through the notes I don’t see where 301 URL redirects are used to old URLs to the new post types.

I also don’t see where I could choose to keep the new formats. Please advise. I’d really like to implement our new theme sometime next month.

Yes we did! However, we only scan this forum approximately once per week as we have a huge volume of support requests and really have to prioritize our customers over on the tri.be forum – though we are of course keen to help here, too ??

So I don’t actually believe we have anything in place that will automatically form 301 redirects from events stored as regular WP posts (as in the original The Events Calendar release) to their more modern custom post type equivalents. There are however numerous plugins out there that you could use to help automatically manage redirects and so that could be worthy of further investigation.

I’m not really sure what you mean by keeping the new formats … can you elaborate?

You guys had me wait all this time for nothing? Damnit! Listen to your subscribers, build upgrade tools like a responsible software company! There ARE NOT plenty of tools that handle that. You’re changing thousands of permalinks (do you know what a permalink is?) to a custom post type destroying well establish domain authority and the PR ranking of sites that used the plugin before you implemented custom post types.

You guys promised a feature and didn’t freaking deliver. Again… What an amateur move! WTH!!!!
