Welcome to PowerPress! You do not have to buy Blubrry Hosting. The plugin is free, you can sign up for free podcast statistics from Blubrry, and even that is optional.

There is good reason not to host your media on the same server as your web site. Large media files take time to download and can cause page loading performance to a traditional website that is normally designed to load smaller pages and images. If your host is giving you unlimited bandwidth then great, but keep in mind once your audience reaches a certain size it will come at a cost to your website’s performance. Just starting out though will never have such problems, it is only something to be concerned about once you start gaining a dedicated audience.

Well. Unless I am wrong. you want 20 dollars a month for one hour podcast?

one hour audio file is about 250 mb is that correct? So 4 podcast a week is 1000 mb

    Hello @jzkits,

You do not have to buy Blubrry Hosting.

If you save your files in mp3 format (highly recommended), at 128kbps stereo, every minute of audio will be approximately 1MB in size. This is high quality for a podcast. Most podcasters will do 96Kbps mono which will give you a smaller file size. Using the 1MB per minute as a guide, you would be able to upload 250 minutes or approximately 4 hours. Also we include what we call no-fault podcast hosting, which allows you to go over your quota each month up to 25%, so if you release 4 episodes that use 240MB of storage, and you have one more 60 minute episode to release, you could do it in that account. With our service you can use the entire storage and more, where-as our competitors do not allow you to fully use the storage they give you.

Again, you do not have to use Blubrry hosting. You can use a competitor of ours and still use our plugin. The plugin itself is free and open source, you can use it without using our services.

I heard I can store MP3’s on Google Drive will that work okay or do you think they will be slow or problems I’m assuming it will work fun

Let me ask the same question what about if I store my MP3 files on my Hosting account like Bluehost I only get a 50 to 100 followers

Using a file storage service like Google Drive may technically work. But these types of services aren’t designed to deliver media to even a small audience of podcast subscribers. Your audience may experience slow downloads, or if you wind up using too much bandwidth, they may cancel your account.

And while services like Bluehost usually offer “unlimited bandwidth” on their website hosting plans, these services still aren’t designed to work like a true, dedicated media hosting platform. You may be fine hosting files there for awhile, but if your resource usage ever gets on their radar, they will take your site down.

    Joe,

You can host your podcast on your current website hosting account. You will know it is time to migrate away when your site performance starts to suffer. At that time you can easily migrate to Blubrry podcast hosting with just a couple clicks. Or as you keep hinting toward, you can go to a competitor of ours. The plugin is free and open source, it works regardless if you use Blubrry hosting.

If you want to support the company that answers your support questions then I would suggest getting a Blubrry hosting account. Blubrry is the only podcast hosting company with email, phone and scheduled video conferencing support options. If you are making a decision based on who you you can get help from, Blubrry is the best choice.

Wow. 20 dollars a month for four one hour podcasts ?

that is quite expensive. Actually it might be more because one mb a minute that comes out to 240 mb

am I paying for bandwidth or bars of gold?

    Plugin Author Angelo Mandato

    (@amandato)

The current cost of a bar of gold is $1266.90.

You are paying for a service that streamlines the process of publishing your podcast all from within your WordPress site, with unlimited storage and bandwidth. As months go by your archive of episodes continue to use bandwidth and storage. The plans are priced based on the amount of storage you need for one month. Other features include the exclusive Blubrry player with social and share options built-in designed for all screens, download and play statistics, options to post your podcast to social networks such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, and free support via email, phone or video conference (Gotomeeting/Skype).

Sorry I miss quoted the price of gold, the $1,266.90 is the price per ounce, the price of a brick of gold which is 400 ounces is $506,400 US dollars.

Thank you again for your kind support. One think I am confused about, which is my fault.

    What do I do FIRST?

    Install the wordpress plugin

    or

    submit my podcast to itunes

or does your plugin do that?

    Plugin Author Angelo Mandato

    (@amandato)

It depends if you already have a podcast? If you have a podcast, please reply with the listing on iTunes and I can tell you where your podcast is coming from and give you a more specific answer of your options.

If you do not have a podcast, then you would want to install the plugin first, set it up and create 1 episode. Once you have an episode then you can submit your podcast to podcast directories like iTunes.
