can i use an existing post to make a new one

Hi,
I’m completely new to WordPress, so apologies if this is something obvious.
Is there a way to use an existing post as the template for a new one?
What I mean exactly is this:
A post (post 1) already exists, written by a user (user 1).
Can another user (user 2) view this post, and then edit the post to create a new post (post 2) which does not overwrite the original (post 1)??
An example of where this might be used is if someone has written a recipe as a post, and then someone else comes along and though they agree with most stuff on the recipe they may feel they want to modify a couple of things (maybe adding in temperature or measurement conversions)
If this is possible is it also possible for the posts to have links to each other. i.e. if someone is viewing post 2 they can see that it was created from post 1 (and vice versa)
