Can I upgrade to 4.7.1

I have been in hospital for quite a while and in recovery. I have this old site which is using WP 4.3.1 however it’s on a LENNY Debian server which I don’t know when will get upgraded.

Is it safe to upgrade WP to 4.3.1 or will it start using PHP 7 code where things like in regular expressions the /e modifier has gone and been replaced by a callback lambda function.

I don’t want to upgrade only to find lots of plugins broken etc due to more modern code.

So is it backwards compatible?

You should be OK, but (as always) take a full backup before you do.

Just ot set your mind at a bit more ease, PHP7 is not required for 4.3.1. It can be used with PHP7, but it can still run on 5.2 if that’s all your host has. The webiste lists that mainly to try and prompt enough people to ask their hosting companies to upgrade their servers to a new version of PH instead of the older versions that 99.99999% of them seem to still run.
