Yes, OSX has apache built right in. I would, however, go here:

and install the latest php and mysql.

These are easily installed and managed through a Systems Preferences panel. This is what I do and I then have unlimited databases to use.

I also use CocoaMySQL to manage the MySQL databases:

These should get you up and running in no time.

check out https://maczealots.com/tutorials/wordpress/ though I would recommend getting hold of phpmyadmin or similar aswell as it avoids the command-line nastyness.

try MAMP, its a no-brain-installation and easy-to-use development tool for OSX.
MAMP stands for: Macintosh, Apache, Mysql and PHP and it also comes with phpMyAdmin
you should run 10.3.x to use it.

I run to or 3 dev versions of 1.5 on my macs. I am always banging in it.

There is a beta version of XAMPP for mac os X, the only problem i had with it. it seen mysql doesn’t seen to start, even though it say it is starting.
i get this error when i try connect to mysql #2002 – Can’t connect to local MySQL server through socket ‘/usr/local/xampp/var/mysql/mysql.sock’ (2)

I know this is an old thread but I don’t see a reply or anything else here regarding solarpunks issue. I just had the same problem and the solution was to re-initialize the database outlined here

I’ve downloaded and installed MAMP. How do I go about setting up WordPress from this point out? I don’t have much experience with this sort of thing, although I have experience running WordPress via a web host. Thanks! – Sky
