• Greetings. I used to have a couple of WP sites but have not been involved with WP for about 3 years. The product sure has matured during that time — I am very impressed with the product and the myriad themes & addons available.

Here’s my question: I have a prospective client who would like a community site for his professional group of about 100 members. The requirements include a small public website of a few pages — just a brochure really — along with a very simple community portal. My first thought was to use a community platform such as one of the nukes or wikis. But honestly, I think that is overkill for these guys — plus I hate those kinds of sites.

What they really want is the ability to post occasional announcements and short articles, share files, have discussions, and post and share their personal profiles. I think WP (maybe along with bbPress) and maybe a profile and file gallery plugin would fit the bill nicely. The thing I like about working with WP is I am already familiar with it, know how to do basic theming, and the finished sites are always robust, simple to use, and professional looking.

I would love some feedback from you all. Is this a good decision? Any ideas, potential pitfalls, etc?

WordPress with BuddyPress could do that easily.

Thanks for the reply. I initially passed over BuddyPress because it looks like more of a Facebook kind of thing. I thought it might be too much on the social networking side for what this organization wants. But since it does include extended profiles and discussions, it may be worth another look. I’m going to set it up this weekend and mess around with it.

BuddyPress can be as FaceBooky as you want. Which is to say mine isn’t at all ?? You can turn off the parts you don’t want.

Hey Ipstenu, I just wanted to give you a shout out and thank you very much for the advice. I decided to set up my site as a network, with the main site (for the general public) using the stock theme and a member community site using BuddyPress. Finally, I installed Private WP on the community site to restrict it to members only.

This setup is going to work very well for my client, as they like the social features of BP but didn’t want their public site cluttered. Your advice was terrific. Thanks again!
