I hope someone can help me.

I have tried several times to use WP, and have been so frustrated each time. I had created a new blog site and had about 20 long posts on it, but decided to move it over to be a Weebly site where I could have much more control, since I know how to make it do what I want it to do.

I asked the guy at BlueHost if I could keep the WP site up and move the content over to the new Weebly site, and he said that I needed to redirect the DNS which would mean that the URL would no longer display the WP site. But that I could get to the WPcontent through accessing the WPfiles. Which sounded perfect since I didn’t need to actual site itself.

I did that yesterday. But now I can’t figure out how to get to my WP content. Every time I use the information I have it redirects me to the new site I created, which surprises me that it is up since I have not yet published it.

How do I get back to the WP files on WordPress? I am so confused by WP and the various versions of it on .org, .com etc. I do not understand how it all works, clearly!

I hope I haven’t lost 4 months worth of work.

If there is some way to log into the WP back office where all the files are that would be what I was told by the guy who advised me yesterday was possible. He said that moving the DNS does not kill the WP files, it only redirects the published data. I sure hope he was right.

    Thank you for your help.

  • Hello academyofspirit,

I am sorry about all the frustration you are having, and I’m sorry your WordPress experience hasn’t been what you had hoped for. However the posts you added to WordPress are most likely still available. I would suggest the one of the two following methods for retrieving your data. Both will work, just pick the one you feel most comfortable with.

    1. WordPress saves all of your data not in the way that many are used to, such as files in folders. Rather all of the pages and posts are saved in a MySQL database (just a large spreadsheet basically). I believe that BlueHost uses phpMyAdmin to view the MySQL database. Inside this database you will find a table entitled “wp_posts”. Inside this in the column “post_content” you will find the content to all of the blog posts you have created.

    2. A possibly easier and less technical way to retrieve your data would be to switch the DNS back to your old WordPress website. From there you can log back on and copy all of the posts you created into a separate document. Then switch the DNS back to your Weebly site, and add them there.

I hope this helps, and all the best for your new website.

    Oh Thank You dschafer28!!!!

It sounds like there IS actually hope of saving my files. It seems very reasonable to find the files in either the MySQL or by reset the DNS. I will try it.

Thank you so much for your experience, and for taking the time to respond to my question. Wishing you the very best!
