Can I do this with SEO Redirection?

    I posted this on a support page for another SEO Redirect plugin by mistake. I’m reposting here because in fact I’m using the SEO Redirection free version:

    I’ve moved a Joomla site to WordPress. The Joomla site had close to 500 tags which have links like “https://mysite.com/components/tag/apples.html” and “https://mysite.com/tags/apples.html”. They need to be redirected to the matching WordPress tags, which look like “https://mysite.com/tag/apples/”. The tags themselves are the same in both sites, just the link structure is different.

    Is there a way to do *bulk* tag redirects using SEO Redirection, either the free or pro versions, so that I can set up *one” redirect rule that will process all the tags? I’ve been experimenting with the free version and it works great with page redirects, and I can do individual tags just fine, but I’m having zero success with bulk tag redirection.

    Any suggestions, or am I asking more of SEO Redirection than it was designed for?

  • Yes, our plugin supports that, you want to redirect “https://mysite.com/components/tag/apples.html” to “https://mysite.com/tags/apples.html”

    in custom redirection:

    1) click “Add New”.
    2)put the first link as a folder in “Redirect from” like “https://mysite.com/components/tag/” and choose the redirect type “Folder”.

    3) beside this link there is two drop down menus, choose “the folder and it’s content” and “include sub-folders”.

    4)put the second link as a folder in “Redirect to” also as “https://mysite.com/tags/”, then choose the redirect type “Folder” .

    5) beside the link there is a drop down menu, choose “Wild Card redirect” instead of “Normal”.

    6) click “Add New” button and enjoy ??

    I want to redirect “https://mysite.com/components/tag/??.html” to “https://mysite.com/tag/??/”. So I want one rule that will redirect all instances of the old Joomla tags to the WP format and in doing so will pick up the variable “??” and as well strip out the “.html” and replace it with forward slash. I don’t want to have to do all 500 or so tag links individually.

    I’ve already tried what you suggested but what happens is that the individual tag doesn’t get transformed from “??.html” to “/??/” and I wind up with 404 errors because the “.html” doesn’t get stripped and WP says it can’t find “??.html”. Does that make sense?

    oh, sorry, our plugin does not support this, I miss understood you, I will add this case in my to do list in the next version.

    It would be great if you could add that. Your plugin works great for me, and I would be happy to buy the pro version if it would do the job with the tags.

    If you’re looking for suggestions for your next version, I would like to see a drop down list of existing posts and pages to make it easier to choose the redirection target. And– it would be nice to have an option to choose the number of redirects per view, same thing with the 404 list– 20 per page, 50 per page, etc
