Can I do this using WordPress?

    I am going to be setting up an online community. I have searched through forums etc and I was wondering whether what I want to achieve can be done through a combination of php, wordpress + plugins?

    The site will be primarily using the buddypress plugin, but I also intend to write an extended diary application… I’ve never done one before, I’ve actually not used php before either! I am more familiar with coldfusion but I am learning php at the moment as CF is pretty redundant these days…

    I was wondering whether anyone could suggest any learning resources? And how to go about writing a php application in combination with WP & plugins?

    I’d really, really appreciate it!
