Can I disable the last modified date in the sitemap?

We’ve got an issue with a site where the last developer let all of the attachments get indexed. So far Google hasn’t wanted to recrawl, because the last modified dates haven’t changed. Is it possible to temporarily remove them to encourage a recrawl?
