I can’t do a back up, because my data is so HUGE it far exceeds the amount of disk space I am allowed. When I did a Largest Files list in Plesk I found I have over 30 files that are named “core” with a number, for example:
    /var/www/vhosts/example.com/core.14732

The number at the end is different for each one, and varies between three, four and five digit numbers. The files are all between 400 and 500 MB. They are all dated yesterday, which is when I did a restore of the site. I also changed the URL of the site on the same day. (I had designed a new site while leaving the old site in place, then changed the URL of the new site to the old name).

What do these files do? Can I delete these files to free up more space?

    Thank you for your help!

Yes. The core.xxx files are from system-level crashes and are not useful to WP. You might ask your host, however, to take a look at one of them to see what might be causing a system crash.
