I have a WordPress blog on my website at https://exality.com/blog, and I’m really happy with it. I installed 4.0 last fall, upgraded to 4.1, and have gone through a couple theme changes and plugin installs/de-installs since then.

I see a number of folders named “backup-xxx” now in my main blog folder and under my wp-content sub-folder, where the xxx includes “wp-admin”, “wp-includes”, “-themes”, or “-plugins”. I think they date from when I changed themes, upgraded WordPress, or modified plugins, but I’m not positive.

Can I safely delete these? The names certainly indicate that I can, but I want to make sure.

    Thanks,
    Gerrit

  • I would guess you can safely delete those, but you might first take a survey of your plugins to see whether one or more of them might complain. Then, there could also be some abandoned tables in your database as left behind by previous plugins…but maybe you already know about that. For database cleanup and optimization, I use WP Clean Up:

Thanks for the tip. I installed and ran WP Clean Up, and I’m sure my database is all cleaned up now. ??

How would I take a survey of my plugins?

My thought about “survey” is to simply take a look to see whether any of your current plugins might have made the backups. If so, deleting the backups might break the plugin or cause some kind of trouble at some point unless the plugin is at least deactivated.

I’m not sure how to tell if a plugin made a backup…

I run a lot of plugins, and every once in a while I take a little time to click through their various options to check things and even do a little tweaking. I would guess any plugin making the kind of backups you have mentioned might have a self-revealing name, but it should not take too long to go for a “clickabout” and see what might show up.

Can anyone tell me for sure whether I can delete these backup folders?

First rename the directories, then exercise your website, view all the pages and go through all the options. Then in a few days time, or longer, if nothing has complained, then you can safely delete those directories.

Yeah, good plan. I’ll try that, thanks!
