Can I build a WordPress site without disabling the old non-WP one?

    Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I can’t find it in the forums. I designed my business website using non-WP software, and it sucks. Since my goofing-around site is WP and I love it, I’ve decided to redo my business site in WordPress.

    HOWEVER …

    I don’t want to take my old business site offline until the new one’s ready. I can’t build the entire new business site in a day, and my clients use the old site daily to do things like look up my rates (it’s ridiculous how often they forget!). I can’t afford to have even my old sucky site down for days on end. Is there a way I can work on my new WP site offline, get it all nice and shiny, and then press a button at some point and replace my current site with its lovely WordPress successor? If so, how would I do that? (I built the goof-off site from scratch in a weekend–can’t do that here.)

    Again, sorry if this is a stupid question, already answered many times. My Google-fu must be weak. My sucky site, if anyone wants to look at it and see why I want to replace it when the time comes, is https://www.SemperEditing.com.

  • how comfortable are you with editing a database downloaded from cpanel. If not, read no further:

    Create a subdomain and install wordpress there. This will have no effect your current site. when built, dump the database file, text edit it and change the paths, rebuild the dumped database with the edited file and move all your files from the subdomain to the regular site.

    OR
    Build your your new site in a short named subdomain, and when it’s ready issue a redirect from your domain to the subdomain.

    I’m not sure what a subdomain is, or how to create one. I run my hosting through BlueHost, if that makes a difference at all … is that where I would go to create a subdomain?

    treat a subdomain as a regular domain. Short name just meant something like my site is redhillsmedia.com and a short name would be rhm so the customer would see rhm.redhillsmedia.com

    with your ftp client you will see a new folder under public_html with the subdomains name, just load wordpress there, everything below the wordpress folder, not the folder itself. Note: with plugins and themes if you ftp them yourself you need to included the folder, if you install theme and plugins via the wordpress control panel it will be done correctly.
