Can I add php code to the header?

    Hi,

    I try to add the following code snippet

    <?php $ratingcount = 1502; ?>

    to the header of a page so that to define the value of a variable which can be used later.

    However, there is a red cross mark beside the line indicating < and > must be escaped, why and how to escape these marks?
