• hi all,

i hope that this is not an annoying question that turns up all the time, but can anybody recommend a good hosting company? i wish to host my WordPress blog–i am switching from the free WordPress.com hosting–as well as my related business site. i have looked around some, but the analyses i find on the Web are all stuffed with glimmering reviews that the hosts clearly write for themselves.

    thanks for considering this.

the closest i have gotten to committing is with HostGator. how are they?

I really like Blue Host…I’m new to this and when I first started I had to call their tech support a couple of times. They were pretty helpful. Also, I’m not sure how other hosts work but it’s easy to edit code from their file manager which I actually prefer to using the theme editor in the WP dashboard.

Whoever you go with, make sure that you can take your domain with you should you choose to switch hosts at a later date. Some of the hosting companies are really just “renting” the domain (or something like that).

thanks, i found a number of really negative reviews for BlueHost, but similarly, who knows if those were just generated by their competition.

really what i need is reliable hosting. it seems so odd to me that they all seem to be competing on price more than anything. bad service can end up costing a small business much more than a few dollars extra month.

I use HostGator, and they’ve been fine (so far).

godaddy.com is amazing. i have to say they are by FAR my favorite and their customer service is always incredible.

hahahaha, I may fall out of my seat. oh wait, I just did.

i have not been able to understand why a hosting company needs to have a NASCAR theme(?).

    HostGator looks OK.

really, like i say reliability and service are priorities for me ahead of real low cost.

if you want a VERY good host, I recommend A small orange.

I no longer use any kind of shared hosting, however if I did I would go back to them.

I got excellent, friendly, and KNOWLEDGEABLE service, the few times I ever needed it.

    thanks,

right now i’m leaning toward Lunarpages. how are they?

I used lunarpages for a while. They oversell, terribly. Theyre a basic shared host —

and alright, i’m obviously a noob. which bad things can happen with shared hosting aside from slow speeds? also, what alternatives are there to shared?

First, not all shared servers are equal…shared does not necessarily equal slow speeds. The primary alternatives are Virtual Private Servers (VPS) and Dedicated. If you want to do some research on the pros/cons of each and find a lot of good information on “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” providers out there, spend some time looking around the forums below:
