I have a client – whom I no longer work with – that has a WP multisite version 3.3.2. The all of a sudden are having email issues. Here is what they are experiencing:

The errors are in Outlook (2007) email client only, not our OWA webmail. Outlook began throwing an error pop-up as below:

Allow this website to configure (username)@gramon.org service settings?

    https://cpanelemaildiscovery.cpanel.net/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml

Your account was redirected to this website for settings.

You should only allow settings from sources you know and trust.

It kept asking to allow or cancel. Clicking cancel did nothing, the pop-up would just reappear. When OK was clicked, Outlook appeared to work normally but upon closing/opening it again the Exchange server proxy settings under “outlook anywhere” were cleared and the “Connect to Microsoft Exchange” box unchecked, breaking the connection to the mail server.

It sounds to me like a virus but they are insisting its the version of WP. Can anyone lend me some insight so I can share with them why it is NOT the WordPress?

  • Are the infected emails originating from the WordPress site? There have been several releases and security releases issued since 3.3.2. If the site is vulnerable, it’s possible that it has been hacked and is now sending out malware infected emails to the email addresses associated with accounts. Although anything is possible, if the emails don’t originate from WP or at least from the server where the site is hosted, then I don’t see the connection between the two.

The emails are not originating from the server. I definitely agree the site NEEDS to be updated but I just don’t want the fingers pointed to the site that its the WP causing their Outlook not to work.

Yeah, sounds like somebody opened an unfamiliar email and now their outlook is broken so it must be the other computer thing’s fault.
